Today we would like to talk about style and the moodboard, and how fundamental these two intimately linked concepts are when it comes to making decisions about furnishing your home. Let’s start with the moodboard and see what it’s for, why it’s important to do one and how to create one.

What is a moodboard?

A moodboard is a kind of blackboard, which can either be digital or physical, and is used to draw together images and suggestions, to be used as inspiration for the atmosphere and style we want to create when furnishing the home.carosello_haute-couture

It is a scientific fact that our brain processes and memorises images much more easily than texts or words. A moodboard is therefore an experiment in creativity that assists us in establishing the right style for our interior furnishing design!

Why is it important to create a moodboard when furnishing the home?

Often, choosing a style, furnishings or colours for our home can be a confusing affair – too many ideas on the table, so many styles and pieces to choose from that are appealing but we just have no idea how to combine them. The result is furniture with no motif, no consistency in style or design that represents who we truly are. The moodboard for home décor provides clarity and excludes what we really dislike or that does not fit in with the rest of the design. In short, the moodboard shows us the way forward in terms of choice of furniture and style.

How do you create a moodboard for your home?

How do you go about creating a moodboard that is truly inspiring, engaging and effective in identifying the style in your home?

● Do a search for furniture styles and look at their key features.

● Then identify the zones in your home where you would like to place your choice (kitchen, floors, furniture pieces, lighting...) and, for each of these zones, look for images you like best based on the style you have chosen.

When creating a physical moodboard, you can use photos, magazine cuttings, fabric scraps or colour swatches. If you prefer to use the digital version, opt for themed boards that are available on Pinterest or the folders you have saved on your PC.

● Once the first collage has been created, reduce the number of items and simplify the moodboard for your home as much as possible, trying to whittle down the choice to just a few items. The rule of thumb is usually 3 items per zone!

This will then be the springboard to create your interior furnishing design – using moodboard, your interior design project will be much easier than you ever imagined.
